Kind of Books
Petra Neurink - 2011
I am always exploring boundaries and possibilities by playing with habits and arrangements.
In what ways are we aware of our surroundings? How do we perceive and process the world in which we go about our daily lives? Do we recognise beauty in everyday objects, or do we overlook them precisely because of the frequency with which we encounter them?
In ‘Kind of Books’, I explore the various meanings of a composition. In search of its boundaries and possibilities, I decided to transform the books on my shelf into sound.
What does this act mean for the content of the book? In what ways does the bookcase take on different, perhaps new, meanings?
The book, as a source of knowledge, transforms into an object through which the composition can be altered. What does this mean for the book? What does this mean for the arrangement of the bookcase?
The book, once a carrier of stories, information and history, transforms into a note; my bookcase into a mural of haphazardly placed blocks in various colours.
The viewer, the organiser of the bookcase, becomes the composer.
